Description: In the acute care setting, many patients are connected to devices and monitors that can provide valuable information about the patient’s readiness to participate in skilled intervention and their tolerance to activity during a session. Understanding basic electrophysiological principles and single-lead electrocardiography (ECG) will contribute to the physical therapy practitioner’s ability to initiate and adjust plan of care and intervention in real-time based on patient response.  The purpose of this talk is to review normal conduction and heart function, and describe normal and frequently seen abnormal cardiac rhythms and their causes.

Objectives

1) Understand the link between ECG waveform and heart function

2) Recognize benign and potentially life threatening rhythms

3) Understand potential causes of arrhythmias

4) Utilize information on monitors and telemetry for clinical decision-making and intervention
