CEU Description: This will be a course about using sound principles of physical therapy and strength and conditioning applied to a general physical preparedness program to keep our patients off of the injured list and doing what they love. This course will attempt to show opportunities to intervene before our little problems become bigger. It will additionally cover ways to keep our injured patients training in a modified capacity in an effort to maintain general fitness for an easier return to activity. 

CEU: 1.5 Credit Hours

CEU Objectives

  • Establish rate of injuries and at risk tissues in both the lay population and recreational athletes
  • Identify risk factors for mentioned injuries in lay population and recreational athlete 
  • Discuss components of a strength and conditioning program that will address risk factors in both the lay population and the recreational athlete
  • Identify opportunities to intervene within the course of a structured class (e.g. crossfit) or bout of exercise
  • Demonstrate exercise interventions for the recreational athlete over the course of an exercise session 
  • Give examples of standard cues that can be effective at different points of an exercise session 
  • Identify ways to continue/maintain fitness levels while athletes are under the care of other health care providers 

About the Presenter: 
Jake is currently a  Senior Physical Therapist with UC Health who has been practicing as a PT for 6 years. He is a certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist as well as earning a CSCS, CMPT, and Crossfit Level 2. He has additionally served as a coach at various CrossFit gyms since 2011, having had the opportunity to have worked with several hundred athletes as they reach their goals. He has been a competitive Olympic Weightlifter, Powerlifter, and Crossfitter in his post-collegiate exercise pursuits and played college rugby at Virginia Tech. Prior to earning his DPT he was a high school teacher in Memphis, TN through Teach for America where he started a wrestling program.
