Description: Selective manual therapy techniques are an integral part of a physical therapist assistant’s collaborative scope of work. This is the first of a two-part PTA course series and will provide a fundamental foundation on specified manual therapy in addition to the current guidelines and recommendations for the PTA. Day 1 will explore different passive and active osteokinematic mobilizations and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation techniques (PNF) as they relate to the cervicothoracic region and the upper quarter. Day 2 will cover neurodynamic mobilization, advanced soft tissue mobilization and stretching techniques. This lab course will be designed to maximize hands-on practice with short lectures and group discussion. Cases will be presented to promote understanding of how and when these techniques are utilized in practice.

During the lab, participants will have expert supervision and guidance from multiple Fellows of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists and active clinicians.

Objectives for participants:

  • Understand the mechanisms of manual therapy for the treatment of musculoskeletal dysfunction
  • Understand current allowances of manual interventions for the PTA under CO statute
  • Develop hands on skills for:
    • Osteokinematic mobilizations, active and passive
    • Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation techniques
    • Neurodynamic mobilization
    • Soft tissue mobilization
    • Soft tissue stretching
  • Learn advanced strategies to instruct patients in self-joint mobilization, PNF, self-neurodynamic mobilization, soft tissue mobilization and stretching
