HEADSTRONG: Differential Diagnosis and Management of Concussion Recovery

Dear Colleagues,

Public Health restrictions on group gatherings have discouraged us from holding the HEADSTRONG Concussion Management workshop in Rifle,  April 25-26, 2020. We will reschedule as soon as is reasonable but need to wait and watch for ‘the curve’ to flatten and for a release from the Public Health Department to congregate with confidence. Physical therapists are integral and indispensable members of the health care team for concussion diagnosis and management. We look forward to facilitating a workshop with you soon.

Heather Campbell, PT, DPT, MA
Nicole Miranda, PT, DPT

Join us on the West Slope for a workshop benefiting the APTA Colorado Chapter for legislative efforts related to concussion!

Program Description
HEADSTRONG: Differential Diagnosis and Management of Concussion Recovery is a professional education collaborative learning workshop for rehabilitation professionals. Evidence-informed baseline care for clients recovering from acquired mild traumatic brain injuries is promoted by capitalizing on each participant’s experience and expertise, pre-course reading, lecture, practice sessions, discussion groups, case presentations and goal-setting challenges. All categories of impairments associated with mTBI as supported in the scientific literature are addressed. Emphasis on particular populations or activities will be determined by the group’s expressed needs. Practical application of diagnostic and treatment skills, clinical measurements of change, return to activity guidelines, and establishing community and healthcare networks will be discussed in the context of resource availability.

Dates of Session:  New Dates/Times will be announced soon!

Location: Grand River Hospital and Medical Center
                 501 Airport Road | Rifle, Colorado 81650

Nicole Miranda, PT, DPT specializes in complex neurological and vestibular rehabilitation as well as rehabilitation following lower extremity limb loss, working with all ages from pediatrics through geriatrics. Her current passions involve mentoring physical therapists to develop critical thinking skills necessary to evaluate and treat patients with expert and compassionate care. Dr. Miranda has participated in the development and presentation of a national concussion course through the APTA Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy and has presented at local education courses and workshops as well as international multidisciplinary conferences. She has been an affiliate faculty member and guest lecturer at Regis University's Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Program in Denver, CO since 2005 and joined the adjunct faculty of DPT Program at South College (TN) in 2018.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the neural pathophysiology of acute mild traumatic brain injury and transition to post concussion disorders, considering personal risk factors, associated trauma, and comorbidities that can lead to prolonged recovery timeframes.
  • Effectively interview, objectively test, and develop a differential diagnosis leading to a customized novel treatment strategy based on patient goals and resources, best evidence, appropriate outcome measures, and critical analysis of all information gathered.
  • Consider categories of post concussive disorders when choosing functional inventories, objective tests and measures, and treatment dosing and prioritization to achieve best outcomes.
  • Provide critical, evidence informed, guidance for return to play, return to learn, return to work, and return to active duty.
  • Understand the roles of the multidisciplinary team, including alternative therapies and devices in facilitating recovery; understand the impact of altered cognition, arousal, sleep, and mood on response to rehabilitation and recovery.
  • Speak confidently on the leadership role of Physical Therapists on the multidisciplinary team for patients recovering from mTBI or PCD.
