CE SIG Event - Jan. 29: “How am I Doing?”

Dr. Stacy M. Carmel, PT, DPT, EdD-C, Assistant Professor, Regis University   

Dr. Carmel has 21 years in physical therapy practice and seven years teaching in physical therapy higher education.  She earned her Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy from the University of Mississippi Medical Center in 1997 and completed her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Western University in California in 2010. Dr. Carmel is presently pursuing a Doctorate in Education from the University of St. Augustine in Florida.

The many areas of physical therapy practice in which Dr. Carmel has experience include out-patient orthopedics, wound intervention, inpatient oncology, and acute care practice. Dr. Carmel has a significant interest in physical therapy clinical education and Physical Therapist and Physical Therapist Assistant intra-professional practice. 

As a member of the American Physical Therapy Association and the Colorado Education Special Interest Group, Dr. Carmel seeks to expand excellence in clinical education; and her scholarship interest focuses on professional collaboration during clinical education and clinical practice. 

Kristen Honker, PT, DPT

Dr. Honker is a graduate of the DPT program at Regis University and practices in geriatrics. She is currently working in partnership with a mobile outpatient practice focused on working with older adults after many years in skilled nursing/long term care facilities. Since 2013, she has shared her passion for this population with students clinically and in the classroom as faculty in both DPT and PTA programs. 

Dr. Honker’s interest in education began prior to her career in physical therapy and included teaching/training and dissemination of information to varied audiences from high school students, non-profit managers, technical sales representatives and software developers.

Objectives: 

  • Participants will be able to describe formative and summative feedback and give examples that occur during clinical education experiences.
  • Participants will differentiate between formative feedback types as they relate to clinical scenarios.
  • Participants will appraise barriers and explore solutions in giving and receiving feedback from both CI and student perspectives

Dr. Honker is an inaugural board member of the Colorado APTA Clinical Education SIG serving as Vice Chair since 2017.

Description: Everyone talks about feedback, but what is it? Please join the Clinical Education Special Interest Group (CE SIG) this winter/spring for an engaging three-part series on Clinical Instructor and student feedback and communication. The first session will focus on types of feedback; in the second session, participants will practice a bi-directional model of feedback; and the third session will provide tips on how to approach difficult conversations that are bound to occur at some point.

Target Audience: The target audience is clinical educators for PT and PTA students, PT and PTA students, those who work with academic programs in the areas of clinical education for PT and PTA students.
